IIT Admissions is the dream of lakhs of students in India. The Indian Institute of Technology or IITs are undoubtedly the best engineering institutions of the country. Not only do they promise the highest quality of education, they also translate to academic and professional success. And yet, many students may not really understand how to get admission in IITs. What is the process? What are the exams for IIT Admissions? Can I get admission in IITs without an entrance exam? Read on to find out.

There are a total of 23 IITs located across the nation. Interested candidates are required to qualify the needed entrance exam to get admission to the prestigious IITs. These exams depend on the kind of course you wish to get admission in.

IITs offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Engineering. Design along with some short-term duration certificate courses. Offered courses at the undergraduate level include Bachelor of Science or B.S., Dual Degree- B. Tech + M. Tech, Dual Degree – B. Sc & M. Sc, Bachelor of Architecture or B. Arch and Bachelor of Design or B. Des. IITs offer postgraduate courses to students including- Master of Science or M. Sc, Dual Degree – M. Sc – Ph. D, Master of Design- M. Des, Master of Business Administration-MBA, Ph. D. Programme.

IIT Admission: Entrance Exams

For Undergraduate B. Tech, B.E. Courses

National and international students both apply for admission to IITs for a bright career in engineering. For B. Tech and B.E. courses, candidates need to qualify JEE Main first. Once the students qualify JEE Main, they then need to appear for and qualify the JEE Advanced examination. While JEE Main is conducted by National Testing Agency, JEE Advanced in conducted by one of the Regional IITs on rotational basis. JEE Advanced 2020 was conducted by IIT Delhi. JEE Advanced 2021, on the other hand, would be conducted by IIT Kharagpur.

For Postgraduate Engineering Courses – M. Tech/ M.E

Irrespective of where someone has done their undergraduate engineering from, students can apply for postgraduate engineering courses at the IITs. In order to do that, they need to appear for the GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering. Unlike the UG degree courses, GATE is a one level examination which is conducted usually in the month of February. GATE score is valid for a period of three years.

Other Courses

Apart from Engineering courses, IITs also offer courses in Design and Management as well as Masters in Science Programs for various subjects. For B. Design, candidates need to qualify UCEED examination whereas CEED entrance exam is a must for M. Design programs. Candidates are required to take the Common Admission Test or CAT Examination conduced by IIMs for admission to the M.B.A programs offered by IITs and Joint Admission Test or JAM for M. Sc. program.

 IIT Admissions: Steps to Apply

  • Check eligibility for the program you want to apply on the official websites of IITs and entrance exams
  • Register for the required entrance exam
  • Login using the registration details
  • Fill in the application form of the entrance exam
  • Upload the required documents scanned in the prescribed format
  • Submit the form and make the mandatory fee payment
  • Print and save the application form and payment receipt for future reference

The result for the entrance exam is declared on the official websites. For admission to B.Tech program, candidates have to appear in JEE Main. Those who qualify JEE Mains are eligible for JEE Advanced entrance exam. After JEE Advanced, the next step is to appear for the JoSAA counselling process which refers to the joint seat allocation for admissions to 23 IITs, 23 IIITs, 31 NITs and 23 other government funded technical institutes.

The admission of candidates to IITs depends upon their scores and rank achieved in the respective entrance exam.
