Engineering courses are amongst the most popular courses in India. Students interested in engineering can pursue a career in it by taking any of the courses. Colleges recognized by the All India Council of Technical Education or AICTE can offer Engineering courses. These can be undergraduate or postgraduate. Indian Technical Institutes or ITI’s offer Diploma’s in Engineering as well.
While Diploma courses are acceptable by many, it is usually the degree courses offered by Engineering Colleges that promise a better career and the recognition of an Engineer. There are many Entrance Examinations like JEE Main which are the first step for getting started. But once you clear the exam, which field to choose? Here is a look at the Types of Engineering Courses offered by Engineering Colleges in India.

More than 13 lakh Indian students apply for Joint Entrance Examination or JEE Main every year, according to reports. At the undergraduate level, students can opt for either Bachelor of Engineering, B.E. or Bachelor of Technology, B.Tech. Top engineering streams preferred by students include Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology Engineering. Engineering courses are offered to students with numerous specializations or branches. A list of some of these branches is provided here.
Students are selected for engineering courses in most institutes on the basis of ranks and scores achieved in entrance exams. The Indian Institutes of Technology, IITs and National Institutes of Technology, NITs and Birla Institute of Science & Technology, BITS Pilani and Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi Technological University, Aligarh Muslim University are amongst the best engineering institutes in India. India has over 5000 Engineering Colleges. Not all colleges offer all the courses.
Some institutes accept admission on the basis of JEE rank while some conduct their own entrance exams. Various entrance exams are conducted at both the national and state level for admission to engineering courses. Some of them are JEE Main, JEE Advanced, UPTU, MHT CET, KIITEE, VITEEE, BITSAT and more. The duration of an engineering course is four years for B.E. or B.Tech and two years for M.E or M.Tech. For Doctorate level engineering, the duration varies from two to six years. The certificate course duration is about one to two years and diploma course duration varies from one to three years.
